E-learning initiative begins in public school

The Dubai Secondary School has launched the 'Ibrahim Al Bihri E-Learning Centre', the first E-learning school project among all Dubai public schools.

Mohammed Youseff Al Aqraa, physics instructor, told Gulf News: "The centre's objective will be to move from traditional ways of teaching to the most sophisticated such as e-Learning, through the use of web sites and e-mails.

"It will also seek to introduce coordination between educational institutions in Dubai by employing all aspects of E-technology in education."

The centre contains 16 computers placed in a special room. All the computers are linked by an internal network system. This network allows each computer to function separately and jointly and at the same time is linked to the instructor's computer.

Each machine is equipped with headphones and a pointer for the purpose of writing symbols and equations in physics, mathematics and biology.

Al Aqraa added: "The focus will be on the student and not the instructor. The instructor's role is limited to preparing his material then supervising the students while they are self-learning. The instructor has the ability to control the 16 computers from his main monitor."

Al Aqraa stressed that the new project, which cost more than Dh50,000, enables the instructor to help weak students without holding up the entire class.

He explained: "Good students could always proceed in the programme while weak students could refer back to the instructor if they face any difficulty in understanding and needed extra guidance."

The 'Ibrahim Al Bihri E-Learning Centre' could also offer students school materials in English, Physics, Mathematics, Biology and Arabic.

Al Aqraa said the Ministry of Education and Youth had presented the school with several CDs for the students to test their educational skills on the new E-learning system.

Khalifa Bin Faris, Assistant Director of the Dubai Education Zone for Financial and Administrative Affairs, attended the official inauguration and was greeted by Mansour Shikri, the school's principal, and Mohammed Al Bihri, who represented his father at the event.

Other school principals from Dubai Education Zone also attended the unveiling of the school's Geology Research Centre.
