Year of Zayed: A year that is a symbol of pride

The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) and Gulf News bring you a weekly initiativethat encourages pupils from schools to report, write and design their own page in the newspaper in a competition that enables them to hone their writing, reading and visual news presentation skills. This week: Al Salam Private School & Nursery

Dubai: President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan declared 2018 as the Year of Zayed as it is the 100th anniversary of the UAE Founding Father’s birth. This year will be a symbol of pride for the citizens of the UAE to cherish.
Shaikh Zayed was a figure of liberality, and it was under his able leadership that the UAE transformed from a desert to an oasis. He bore the humility of scholars, prestige of rulers, intelligence of Al Ghazali, and the generosity of Arabs.
Shaikh Zayed has pioneered excellence in divergent fields. Here are some of his paramount achievements: Champions of the Earth awarded by the UN environment in 2005, The Golden Document awarded by the International Organisation for Foreigners in Geneva in 1985, Man of the Year — 1988 awarded in Paris.

Shaikh Zayed will forever be in our hearts for his exemplary and remarkable character and contribution to this glorious nation.
In honour of our precious Founding Father, we, at Al Salam Private School, organised an Arabic Calligraphy Competition on January 4 in line with the Year of Zayed. Some of our extremely talented students participated and showcased their skills in the competition.

In addition, His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commader of the UAE Armed Forces, and Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, joined community members in the Walk Together march, organised by the Higher Committee for the Special Olympics World Games 2019, at the Umm Al Emarat Park in Abu Dhabi.
It gives us immense pleasure to celebrate Shaikh Zayed’s greatness and eminence with absolute gratification.

The quote celebrated at this year’s Emirates Airline Festival of Literature was ‘For the love of books’.
The 10-day programme began from March 1 to March 10 included numerous conferences, competitions and workshops for all ages, This year marked the 10th year of the festival and it surely has been the best so far. This year’s ‘surprise location’ was held in Intercontinental Hotel at Dubai Festival City.

Our school participated in a number of major events which included the Chevron Readers Cup Competition. Three teams enrolled in this competition: one team from the primary and two from the secondary.
The students also took part in a Free Education Day session that was held at The Cultural and Scientific Association Building, Al Mamzar on March 4. The students were divided in two groups — primary and secondary.
At the start of the event, the students were given time slots in which they had to participate in a ‘Live Art’ event, where they had to depict on canvases the theme, ‘Memories’. They later got the opportunity to meet the amazing Anthony Horowitz, writer of the best selling series ‘Alex Rider’.

One of our students had the privilege of attending the poetry for all competition. In the finals, Bola Ajike recited a poem called ‘Sympathy’ by Paul Laurence Dunbar.

School to organise TEDx event in the summer

Dubai: Al Salam Private School is officially holding its very own TEDx event and applications have been piling in ever since the announcement.

What is TEDx? It is an international community that organises TED-style events anywhere and everywhere, celebrating locally-driven ideas and elevating them to a global stage.

TED is an acronym for Technology, Entertainment, Design. TEDx events are produced independently of TED conferences, each event curates speakers on their own, but based on TED’s format and rules.
The event is to be held during the summer, right after the final examination. and it has everyone buzzing.
The event is being managed by senior students Farha Sherief and Siba Mahmood.

Participants are free to choose their topics. The intention of holding this event is to introduce new topics that are yet to be heard of and to give students a once in a lifetime opportunity to speak their mind at such a substantial conference.
“I hope everyone can collaborate and spread ideas worth promoting” said Taher Gharib, director of the school.
“We don’t want to limit people, we want new ideas to come together”said Sherief.
