Abu Dhabi authorities aiming to beat the bullies in schools

The year-long campaign, which will cover schools in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region, will be conducted by the family prosecution section at Abu Dhabi Judicial Department in coordination with Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC).

“The programmes aim to educate children and teachers on how to recognise and combat bullying, be it physical, verbal, racial or emotional,” Mohammed Rashid Al Dhahani, head of the family prosecution department, said yesterday during the launch.

“The main problem is that children often don’t recognise when they are being bullied. It’s great teaching them about bullying and its effects,” he added. Al Dhahani said the campaign will include lectures in schools, plus leaflets distributed to children and teachers.

The campaign targets students up to grade 11. It will also educate children on crimes punishable by law, including use of drugs, theft and rape, and the dangers of involving themselves in such crimes.

“Children need to be educated about crimes and how they can avoid involving themselves in such crimes, as most of the youngsters copy the bad habits from their peers,” said Al Dhahani, adding that cases involving juveniles have been on the increase in the capital.
