Art Dubai 2014 to include more than 80 galleries
Dubai Participating galleries in the eighth edition of Art Dubai, which will take place at Madinat Jumeirah on March 19-22, 2014, as well as the launch of a new series were announced on Monday.
Known as one of the most global and innovative of art fairs, Art Dubai now features three gallery programmes, instead of two, offering audiences the opportunity to discover the work of more than 500 artists from more than 80 galleries from 35 countries.
The galleries ranges from the world’s most influential galleries to dynamic young art spaces.
“Over the past eight years, Art Dubai has evolved into an extraordinarily dynamic art fair, with a particular emphasis on diversity and quality,” Antonia Carver, Art Dubai Fair Director, said. “Our roots are in the growing local UAE arts scene, leveraging Dubai’s position as a global hub, linking Africa, the Middle East and Asia. With galleries included in Contemporary, Modern and Marker, visitors will be able to make connections between artists and art movements as never before.”
This year will see the launch of Art Dubai Modern, a series of solo and two-person booth exhibitions, plus research projects, devoted to modern masters from the Middle East and South Asia. This precise programme has been developed with a group of eminent historians and curators, including Savita Apte, Catherine David, Kristine Khouri and Nada Shabout.
Artists exhibiting in the inaugural edition of Art Dubai Modern include Hamad Abdullah (with Karim Francis gallery, Cairo); Rasheed Araeen (Grosvenor Vadehra, London/New Delhi); Michel Basbous (Agial, Beirut); Ardeshir Mohasses (Shirin Gallery, Tehran/New York); and Anwar Jalal Shemza (Jhaveri Contemporary, Mumbai).
Marker, Art Dubai’s curated programme of galleries and art spaces, which focuses each year on a particular theme or geography, with be focusing on Central Asia and the Caucasus and is curated by the artists Slavs and Tatars. Participating spaces, plus a programme of projects, research, and educational initiatives, for Marker will be announced early December.
Marker aims to exemplify the fair’s role as a site of discovery and cross-cultural exchange, and is a feature of Art Dubai’s extensive not-for-profit programming.
Art Dubai is held under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and is in partnership with the Abraaj Group and sponsored by Cartier. The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority is a strategic partner of Art Dubai, and supports the fair’s year round education programme.
Art Dubai’s contemporary halls have again been heavily oversubscribed, and the independent selection process was lengthy and stringent. Galleries joining the fair for the first time include Baró Galeria (São Paulo), The Breeder (Athens), Gladstone Gallery (New York), Marian Goodman (New York/Paris), Galerie Greta Meert (Brussels), Galleria Franco Noero (Turin), Gallery SKE (Bangalore), Yavuz Fine Art (Singapore), and 313 Art Project (Seoul).
