Dubai university launches new PhD programmes
Heriot Watt University in Dubai has announced plans to create PhD programmes in five subjects.
Professor Ammar Kaka, vice-principal of Heriot-Watt University and head of the Dubai campus, said that the PhD programmes will be in five subjects: Accountancy and Finance, Energy and Renewable Energy, Power Electronics and Control, Construction Management and Civil Engineering.
The move comes in the wake of a recently published report, titled ‘Higher Education Landscape in Dubai’. As per its findings. though there are more than 48,000 students enrolled in higher education institutes in Dubai, just 1 per cent of them have undertaken PhD studies full-time.
“There is a shortage of PhD programmes offered in the UAE by local universities. Only very few branch campuses have started to introduce them. We have gathered our own evidence in the form of enquiries and also from our graduates who are keen to further their education with us that there is a high demand for PhD courses,” said Kaka.
