All UAE universities to teach Emirate Studies

Students must pass to graduates from national or private institutions. Dubai: His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, chaired the cabinet meeting at the Union House in Dubai and announced some important decisions including the introduction of Emirate Studies as a subject which will be compulsory for graduation from national or private universities in the UAE.

Gulf News spoke to university officials and parents to gauge their thoughts regarding the introduction of Emirate Studies as a compulsory subject.

Salem Yousuf Al Qaseer, vice-chancellor for public affairs at the American University of Sharjah, stated: “Such subjects are common in most universities around the world, they aim in introducing the students to the culture of that country. We appreciate such decisions as we feel that there is a need to introduce UAE culture to the new generations in our universities.”
 
Jordanian mother-of-seven, Manal Al Khatib, expressed support for the decision. “I agree with His Highness’s decision, I think it is important that if a student is living in a country that he learn about the county’s history and origins. There are already subjects related to UAE heritage given in schools, so school students are already gaining this information. However when it comes to the university students who come for four years to study in UAE universities, there is no source of information provided.” she said.

“Imagine living in a country for four years, then leaving without knowing anything about that country’s history or origin!” she said.
